the transcendentals
Contemporary encounters with truth, goodness & beauty

The notion of "transcendentals" - properties of every "thing" that exists, rooted in their being and yet directing our attention beyond the physical -  There is much about the University of Michigan - and universities in general - that is true, good and beautiful. The purpose of this series of lectures is to help us understand what that statement means.

The notion of the "transcendentals" -the fundamental properties shared by all "beings" and those first apprehended by the intellect - is rooted in the philosophy of Antiquity, insofar as philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle attempted to understand and explain what it is "to be".
